Aero Fox XL

aerofox_previewClick for more images

This theme has the smaller buttons to minimize toolbar height. If you like the larger buttons of the original Aero Fox, I have released Aero Fox XL which you can install here.

Aero Fox is designed with style in mind for those who love the look of Windows Vista Aero theme. Based on user feedback, the tabs have been redesigned to better fit in with the overall look and feel of the theme while making the inactive tabs easier to read and the active tab clearly stand out. I have also returned the darker drop down menus along with skinned Options, Customize, and Extensions windows. Aero Fox 3.5 is also more compatible with popular extensions such as Fission, AIOS, Colorful Tabs, Feed Sidebar, Web Mail, FoxyTunes, etc. Users of Colorful Tabs should also install Tab Mix Plus in order to customized the font colors.

All of my themes will now be Mac and Windows (as well as Linux) compatible so everyone will be able to use them regardless of which OS you are operating. I built my themes on top of the default theme for each system so it displays properly no matter which OS you are running. Previous version had issues on Mac since it was built on the PC version of the default theme.

To enable me to spend the time needed to develop my themes and keep them free to you, I partnered with Ask.com. When you install this theme, you will have the option to set Ask Chrome Search Extension as the default search engine in the browser search window. By using Ask for your searches, you will help subsidize the cost needed to develop, create, and maintain my themes as I continue to improve and expand my collection. Installing Ask.com as the default search does not prevent you from using other search engines later on nor does it affect any of your browser settings apart from the default search setting.

All my themes and the Ask Chrome Search Extension are certified and guaranteed spyware free.

    Hi,

today i have downloaded the new version of my aero fox for mozilla, the upload popped up when i open mozilla, a theme that i like and i use usually.

But the bad surprise following the application of the new release was the black menu when i press the right button.

I have serious difficulties to read the new black menu.

I have searched to disinstall, but i cannot return to my old release.

Can you send me the old release with white sheet when pressing right button ?

    Thank for your assistence

What dictionary add-on are you taking about? I will install it and see what needs to be done if you give me the link to the listing.

I love this theme, but in the 3.5 version, I feel that the buttons are really small and the blue in the tabs does not look very good. Is there any way I can get the older version to work in FF 3.5.

    Thanks

  11. Brett on December 12th, 2009 11:15 am

You can get a version with the bigger buttons here http://www.virtusdesigns.net/?page_id=1253

As for the new tabs, the blue active tab makes it easier to identify and the black inactive tabs with the white text makes them easier to read so I am going to stick with that design. I didn’t like the look of the old tabs. They didn’t fit as nicely with the overall look of the theme.

  12. J on December 12th, 2009 11:16 pm

    Hey,
Thanks for replying. Is there anyway I can make the older version compatible for Firefox 3.5? I know that it worked before. (I had to uninstall FF 3.5 cuz of some error). I used the older version perfectly fine on FF 3.5 before but now when I tried to install it, it says it is not compatible.
I like to older version of the tabs and the older theme in general.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  13. Vereor on December 16th, 2009 12:19 am

    Great Theme as always.
The only trouble I have with the FF3.5 version is that the theme only covers the first row of tabs. If you use something like Tabmix plus and have multiple rows of tabs, every row after the first one goes back to the default color scheme.
This was not a problem in the previous version.

  14. Brett on December 16th, 2009 7:10 am

I have a fix for that, I will release an update soon.

  21. Victor on January 9th, 2010 12:02 pm

Hey thanks a lot for this great great theme. I do have one quip though. I have had it installed on my 23 inch monitor for a while and the buttons are really small. I saw that you have Aero Fox XL but am afraid to install it. The reason is the Blue Highlighted Tab or whatever you call it. I have Aero Fox installed in Firefox and up to date and the tab is black. I am typing this from another computer running Linux and I see that you changed the design to blue. Is there an about:config hack to change it back to black or can you set it as an option? A response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Hello,

very beautiful theme but i’ve some problems with it.

    first:
    when I enter in ->tools->options
there is a lot of text I can’t read

    second:
when I select text in the Url bar the background color stay white, it’s difficult to know if test is selected or not, the txt color is not sufficient for that.

however, thanks for this great theme and please.

PS: please excuse my bad english.

  25. Stefan on January 15th, 2010 11:55 am

It’s a great theme. I love it, but there is something I prefer in the older versions. Is there a chance I can find a release with a bit older version of the tabs: oval edges and without the blue color… I suggest you made some “retro” releases, which look like the older releases, but are compatible with the new versions of Firefox. Thanks.

  26. Mega on January 15th, 2010 6:43 pm

I liked the previous version of Aero Fox. With the bigger buttons and the curved edges on the top of tabs. The new one is O.K. too but I just liked the other one better. How do you make these anyway? I would like to try making some myself.

    Hello!
Thank you for making this theme!
Since I got Firefox 3.5 that I’ve been getting blind with all the whiteness all around the window, but I can finally be in peace now…
    The only slight problem is…
Wtf happened to the buttons, fonts, and tabs? They’re so tiny!
Can you put them in the original size? Please…

    Thank you in advance,
    Chinoman10.

PS: I’m sure my opinion is the same as for much people since I’ve read a shitload of comments about this new theme.

  31. Brett on January 26th, 2010 2:47 pm

I did make the buttons smaller to save space. I have Aero Fox XL available that uses the larger buttons for those who don’t like the smaller ones. As for the tabs, they aren’t any smaller than previous versions.

  32. Silber on January 26th, 2010 5:00 pm

I love the theme. I have been keeping up with the updates, but the most recent one has been causing serious issues with my browser (lag time opening firefox, issues buffering videos, loading webpages, loading menus). I hope this will be fixed soon because i do love this theme so much

  33. Maarten Bolhuis on January 27th, 2010 2:05 am

    Hallo,

Great Theme, I really love the look and feel.
With the new update everything is Areo black I really like that, however there are still to parts of Firefox that aren’t black.

    1. The search bar if you hit Ctrl+f

    2. The Download Statusbar(Link). That is an add-on for Firefox that i really like. If you download something a little WHITE bar will pop-up and stay there unless you remove al the downloads form the bar. That means that only that little bar is white while vista and Firefox is black.

It isn’t a really big issue but i thought i let you know anyway.

    Grtz

  38. Brett on January 27th, 2010 12:24 pm

Thanks for the heads up, it is impossible to test my themes with every single extension so I rely on people like you to let me know if there are issues with certain extensions. I will definitely match the search bar and install the Download Statusbar to get that skinned properly as well. Look for those on the next update. I plan on getting that out soon. Thanks again.

I love your theme, and have been using it for so many years that i can’t remember when i started. You are an artist, when it comes to Firefox. 5 stars given, and 5 stars more then earned.
But now, after Thunderbird went 3,0, i can no longer have the theme on both, so i was wondering if your planning to update Aero Thunderbird?

  46. Rept-Tile on February 8th, 2010 11:49 pm

Hello and thanks for a wonderful theme. I use it over 2 years on all my computers and just moved to FF 3.5

Using 3.5 XL, I have icons of the same size as in 3.6.1 and can’t see the difference. What am I doing wrong?

And btw, why ain’t these new themes published in FF add-ons official page?

    Thank you.

  47. Rept-Tile on February 9th, 2010 12:24 am

And yet 2 little bug reports regarding colors in the theme
    1. in a search bar (right to address line), the selected text has a same color as a usual text. It makes the 1st thought that text selection in this bar doesn’t work at all

    2. in THIS comments page, when typing a “capture” in a lowest window, the hint list of previously typed words is slowing down (as in all same windows). But selected line in that list has both foreground and background colors white.

  48. Stefan on February 9th, 2010 1:46 am

I personally think that Aerofox XL is the best theme now because the font and the buttons are easier to read, especially on resolutions like 1280×1024 on bigger screens. The standart version looks tiny with these settings. And the latest Aerofox is a bit darker (the Ctrl+F bar, the Add-ons window is all dark and the old had white background) so its harder to see some things because the lack of contrast.
And one thing left, I have some bugs in the version I use (Aero Fox XL 3.5). When I go to the Tools -> Options menu I have no text in some windows. I’ll send you screenshots.

I have been waiting for Firefox to approve all of my themes on their AMO page. I uploaded them in mid-December and they haven’t reviewed them yet. I just uploaded a new version of Aero XL on their site. I will do an update as well for those who have already installed it through my website.

  50. Brett on February 9th, 2010 9:27 am

I have a new version of Aero XL that I will release today. That should fix the major issues.

    Hey man,

I’ve been using Aero Fox for a while now but the new black background for the bookmarks etc. is just really pissing me off right now. I’ve tried to use the “Previous version of Aero Fox” but it’s not working. Please help me out here bro.

    Thanks in advance

  52. Brett on February 9th, 2010 3:56 pm

Try uninstalling the latest version then reinstalling using the link at the bottom of the page. You probably want to use version 3.5

  53. Janet on February 9th, 2010 9:59 pm

I’ve also been using Aerofox for a long time and love it, but really don’t like these black menu pull-downs–extremely hard on the eyes. I tried uninstalling this new version and reinstalling 3.5 but am still getting completely black menus and RRS feeds…maybe I had an even earlier version of Aerofox before, not sure. But I may have to switch to something else as I really don’t can’t read these white on black menus.

  54. Brett on February 9th, 2010 10:34 pm
  55. Janet on February 10th, 2010 5:28 am

tried that…tells me I can’t install it because its not compatible with my Firefox (3.5.7). Oh well, maybe I’ll try Aerofox Silver, although I really love the original, I just can’t read these menus!

  56. Jason on February 11th, 2010 6:09 am

Just installed the latest update when Firefox started, and now I’m being bugged to install Ask.com as my default search engine, and got “Virtus Ask Search Plugin” as an extension, which I promptly uninstalled.

Why should a theme be installing extensions, or bugging me abut anything?

  57. Brett on February 11th, 2010 8:52 am

I wouldn’t consider it “bugging”. I simply stated that Ask.com is now included with my themes and asked you if you would like to install it to support the development of my themes. If you do not want to support the development of my themes by using Ask, you can click cancel or uninstall it as you did.

I do not find anything unreasonable about asking users to support me by installing a free search engine plugin with a free theme. Mozilla does this very thing by installing a free search engine plugin (Google) with their free Firefox browser. I have done everything possible to give users the ability to choose and have made it very easy to implement, reject, or uninstall.

  58. MaLo on February 12th, 2010 12:42 am

I uninstalled your stuff completely, but I’m still bugged by the Ask.com popup anytime I start Firefox. How can I get rid of this ‘very annoying’ popup ?

    Thanks in advance.

  59. Brett on February 12th, 2010 8:38 am

If you clicked cancel on the opt-in window then it uninstalls after you restart. My theme is completely independent of the search plugin extension.

Love your theme! Have tried a few others but keep coming back to Aero Fox. I have what I consider a minimal problem. When going to Tools – Options the panel that displays the options is mostly blank as if the background color and the print is the same color. The clickable buttons are visible but not the text. Switching to another theme cures the problem. Thanks, Brian Aero Fox 3.5 FireFox 3.6

  68. Doc on April 27th, 2010 10:48 am

3.6.0 was the best so far. Lots of bugs even in 3..60: Scroll bars and buttons don’t look right if they get too big, sliders (like those in Grab and Drag preferences) have a half-black background to the buttons, and in 3.6.1 and 3.6.2, the blue “current tab” looks hideous. Sticking with 3.6.0 until I can find a decent “Aero Black” theme to replace it.
